We will also officially welcome Fr. Michael O’Loughlin as pastor of the Proto-Cathedral of St. Mary. The festivities begin will the celebration of the Divine Liturgy at 10:00 AM, followed by a potluck luncheon in the parish hall. Sign-up sheets can be found in the small hall. The deadline for signing up is Sunday, September 22nd. Once again, Family Day will be a joint venture of the Proto-Cathedral of St. Mary and the Presentation of Mary Romania Catholic Mission.

Upcoming Feasts

Exaltation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross
The Byzantine churches commemorate the cross of Christ twice a year, and twice a week. The first solemn feast is the Exaltation of the Precious Cross on Sept. 14th. This feast remembers the 4th century discovery of the cross by Helen, Constantine the Great’s mother, and its subsequent elevation and veneration by the people of Jerusalem. The second annual commemoration is on the third Sunday of the Great Fast (Lent). On this Sunday Byzantines remember the 7th century return of the true cross after it was stolen by the Persians. This Sunday orients the cross at the center of the Great Fast since Christ sacrifice is the center of our faith. We Byzantines also remember the cross every Wednesday (the Day Judas received money for betraying Christ) and Friday (the day Christ died on the Cross).

Nativity of the Theotokos (Mother of God)
The story of the birth of the Theotokos is not in bible, but this tradition is recounted in the 2nd century “Protoevangelium of James”. (http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/0847.htm) The Theotokos is one of only two saints, along with Our Lord, whose birth we celebrate as a feast. A saints “birth” day into heaven (the day they died) is usually a saint’s feast. The other saint whose birth we celebrate is John the Baptist (June 24). The feast of the Birth of the Theotokos is also the first major feast of the church year, and her death (August 15) is the last.
