REFLECTIONS ON THE GREAT FAST

We become Christians by participation in the sufferings of Christ.  Our prayers and fasting during this season of the Great Fast should lead us to participation in the spiritual realities of Pascha.  Our self-emptying takes many forms but will always lead us to a more serious following of Jesus.  The woman taken in adultery participated in the sufferings of Jesus in her experience of condemnation and defenselessness. Her liberation is an act of God’s mercy and providential help.  Jesus takes this event seriously: there has to be a deep truth coming out of this experience.  “Go, and sin no more,” Jesus commands the woman.  Jesus now calls us to a new life during the Great Fast.  Pascha should see us well along the path to freedom from the slavery of our sinful inclinations, and alive with the joy of resurrected life.
