EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT THE GREAT FAST, BUT WERE AFRAID TO ASK

When do we start?  We have already started our preparation for the Great Fast beginning with the Sunday of Zacchaeus, January 14th.  These Sundays have given us ideas, motivation and direction for a successful Great Fast.  The Great Fast actually begins on Pure Monday, February 12th.

What about Ash Wednesday?   The Byzantine Church does not have an Ash Wednesday.  The Western (Latin) Church begins the holy season on a Wednesday with their proper services which include the distribution of ashes.  The Byzantine Churches start two days earlier because they use s different counting system to arrive as the traditional forty days. The Western Len consists of forty days, excluding Sundays,

Leading up to Easter Sunday.  The Byzantine Churches keep the forty days without interruption leading up to Lazarus Saturday.  This accounts for the different starting dates.  Great and Holy Week is a separate and more intense period in preparation for Pascha.

Where do we go from here?  Hopefully, you now know more about the Great Fast.  You are the only one who can make something out of the Great Fast.  Prepare how you will abstain; how much you will pray, especially by participating in the weekday services; and how you will give alms.  Plan well what you will be doing to make this Great Fast the best in your life.
